MBABANE – In as much as the expulsion of the Zimbabwean referee who cost Sihlangu the game against Madagascar from the COSAFA Cup changes nothing, the national team has come out to declare its happiness at finally seeing justice being served.

The referee was sent home for having made mistakes that cost Sihlangu a real chance of beating Madagascar to progress to the quarter-finals during the Group B decider when he first awarded Madagascar a dubious penalty before he denied Sihlangu a legitimate one.

The public outcry was heard by the heads of COSAFA and after the match’s video footage was reviewed, the referee was found to have blundered and consequently contributed to the outcome of the match that ensured that the home side crashed out of the tournament. He was duly sent home.
Sihlangu Manager Josiah ‘Digger’ Dlamini said they were elated in that the referee had been shamed for his poor and questionable judgements despite that this did not mean anything in terms of the competition itself.

“We are happy that justice has been served. It is good that the obvious fact that he contributed to us being knocked out has been made public knowledge so that the world can see that we were short-changed and that is why we were booted out. Results of such acts come out at the end of the day. It was painful for us to get such a bad result due to poor refereeing.”

Dlamini said he was glad that the team showed a high level of maturity and professionalism by concentrating on fighting inside the field of play rather than attacking the referee even though he was allegedly visibly against Swaziland in the match.
