SIPHOFANENI – Former Premier League side Ubombo Flyers beat City Warriors by 3-0 to survive a nerve-wrecking decider yesterday.
The Big Bend based side visited Warriors at the dusty Siphofaneni Sports Ground looking over their shoulders as they were tied with the same 66 points on top of the Swazi Trac Lubombo Super League log with promotion hopefuls, Illovo. It proved to be a dramatic end to the season as the latter recorded an unbelievable 14-0 win against already relegated Wenela Pirates at Mayaluka Stadium in Big Bend. It was case of too little too late as Flyers eventually enjoyed a one goal difference.
Despite being frustrated for the better part of the clash, Flyers proved their tenacity to overcome the stubborn opposition. It was trusted goal-poacher Ananias Gamedze, who scored three times in the SwaziBank Cup early this year, who broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute after receiving a defence freezing cross from Sibusiso Simelane. It was the only goal of the eventful first half.
Warriors were in the ascendancy after the re-start as they penetrated through the wings but it was the visitors who doubled their advantage against the run of play four minutes before the hour mark. Linda Maphalala fired home from close range as the defence froze from a failed offside trap. Derrick Ndzimandze then sealed the championship for the side with 21 minutes to play. For being champions of the E40 000 sponsored league, Flyers pocketed E14 000 while the runners-up got half the amount.
Flyers who are also known as ‘Mahashulane’ are returning to the bigger stage after several years in the ‘wilderness’. They are known for producing Premier League stars that include the Sikhondze brothers, ‘Pupu’, Musa and ‘Papi.”
