EZULWINI – Top professional golfers, Meshack Zwane and Arthur Horne, are hoisting the country’s flag among the world’s best in the celebrated E1 million sponsored Investec Royal Swazi Open.

The event, which is part of the Sunshine Tour series, started at the Royal Swazi Spa Golf Course in Ezulwini yesterday.
The pair was ranked 30th with six points after the opening round. Zwane expressed his delight on making the tournament after coming through the qualifiers on Tuesday.

“I would have loved to do better but focus is on tomorrow (today’s) round. I’ll push hard to be among the top 50 who will make the third round.”
Over 70 golfers took to greens in pursuit of the lucrative E158 500 first prize. Over the next few days, Zwane and Horne will have to chase down visiting early leader Doug McGuigan of South Africa, who racked up 17 points during a superb opening round.

The event has adopted the modified stableford scoring system that promotes aggressive golf.  It awards eight points for an albatross, five for an eagle and two for a birdie.

Zero points are awarded for a par, while one point is deducted for a bogey and three for a double bogey or worse.
Topping off the major prize is a new bonus of R50 000 to the player who makes the most points each day.
Prizes are up to the 50th placed golfer who will walk away with E5 456.The tournament, coupled with an amateur’s golf event, will end on Saturday.
