MATSAPHA – The Athletics Association of Swaziland (AAS) has lost a pillar after retired long-distance runner Lucky ‘Wanyenya’ Dlamini recently lost a battle with an illness and passed on.

The sad news was delivered to the athletes and officials yesterday by Track and Field Committee Chairman Selby Shongwe, before the start of the competition that was hosted at Matsapha Police College, where his memory was honoured with a moment of silence. He met his demise while still striving to produce young talent for the sport as coach of Great Ususthu Athletics Club.

One of the people who walked his life with him in the sport said: “He was devoted to the sport. He lived for athletics and you must take leaf from him that after retiring as an athlete, he ventured into coaching to show that you can still benefit the sport even after you hang your spikes.”

Meanwhile, Shongwe said the association had lost one of its strongholds, especially his committee in which Dlamini served. He said Dlamini would likely be laid to rest on Saturday, but they were yet to confirm with his family.  Meanwhile, Manzini Wanderers, who partnered with Great Ususthu, also received the news with shock.

Wanderers PRO Mduduzi ‘Mr G’ Ginindza said: “This is a great loss for us. His passing on comes when we were working towards realising a great dream. We are saddened as the Manzini Wanderers family to learn of his death.”
Dlamini was also the team’s avid supporter.
