MBABANE – Blue Whales Swim Club’s Simanga Dlamini clocked 25:28 minutes to complete the annual KPMG Swazi Mile (1.6km) swim inside the Luphohlo Dam yesterday.

The 17-year-old outclassed all the 66 swimmers who took part in the event. Dlamini was part of the Region V swimming squad that represented the country in Zimbabwe in December. On Saturday he was part of the swimmers who reaped medals during the SWAKI Gala held at Sifundzani Primary School.

Dlamini, who was fourth last year, showed great improvement. He took the lead from the start together with second finisher Josh Voight, who finished in 25:38 minutes while Mark Hoare was third on 25:40 minutes.
Dlamini said he was impressed with his performance.

He said he never thought that he would be the champion as there were good swimmers who also took part in the event.
“I think I had good preparation and lot of stamina. It was hard at first but once I was in the middle I decided to stay with the leaders and my finish-up was good. This is good and I will continue to work hard as I look forward to defending the title next year,” he said.

Voight said he was competing in the event for fun.
He said due to his tight schedule, he was now not fully involved in swimming.
“Simanga did well. It was tough but he was able to come out strong and I congratulate him,” said the 18-year-old.

In the Ladies section, 16-year-old Megan Short was first in overall. She came out fourth just behind the trio of Dlamini, Voight and Hoare.
“The three boys in front of me gave me encouragement as I was able to be at their back until the last few metres. It was a great challenge and I’m happy with my performance,” she said.
The winners were presented with trophies, T-shirts and certificates for their achievements.
