MBABANE – The shuttle service transporting passengers to and from the King Mswati III International Airport was delayed when a public transport inspector stopped it and demanded that the driver produces certain documents.

The incident reportedly occurred about a week ago near Malindza.
It could not be established whether the shuttle was coming from or going to the airport but police confirmed that it was delayed for a few minutes.
A source said the public transport inspector had not mounted a roadblock but was driving along the road when he spotted the bus, trading as Intamakuphila Bus Service.

“He then drove his patrol vehicle in between the shuttle and the police escort and then signalled to the shuttle driver to stop by the side of the road. The shuttle driver complied and the police escort also stopped and reasoned with the inspector,” said a source.
After talking to the police escorts, the source said, the inspector allowed the bus to proceed with its journey. Police Deputy Information and Communications Officer Assistant Superintendent Khulani Mamba confirmed the incident

He said the police escorting the shuttle intervened promptly and called the public transport inspector to order. “I think it was a mistake on his part to stop the shuttle. He should have realised that the bus was being escorted since vehicles with escorts are respected and allowed to flow freely without being stopped,” said Mamba.

The Swaziland Civil Aviation Authority (SWACAA), which operates the airport, said the incident was not formally reported.
SWACAA Director Marketing and Corporate Affairs Sabelo Dlamini said: “Maybe the incident was something so insignificant that the relevant manager dealing with such issues felt he could deal with it at that level.”
Meanwhile, the Director of public transport inspectors Musa Myeni could not be reached for comment as his cellphone was switched off when called yesterday evening.
