DIARRHOEA DEATH TOLL AT 27
MBABANE – About 27 children have died from Diarrhoea which is affecting mainly children under the age of two.
On Monday the Ministry of Health released a statement that 27 children had died from the diarrhoea. Yesterday, more statistics from hospitals countrywide were also received by the ministry reporting that there were more deaths.
The ministry could not confirm the latest death toll.
Dr Simon Zwane, the Principal Secretary (PS), who issued the statement on behalf of the ministry, stated that the department was doing everything within its power to contain the outbreak.
Zwane also used the same medium to send condolences to the affected families.
The PS stated that all children suffering from diarrhoea or vomiting should be taken to health facilities immediately.
He stated that the latest outbreak of diarrhoea was affecting everyone but mostly children.
“The ministry has taken all necessary action to strengthen response and monitor the situation,” stated the PS in a press release.
He stated that a team of technical experts had been set up to respond to the situation.
Zwane also stated that the team had been to all regional hospitals and health centres to collect patient information to establish the cause as well as the extent of the outbreak.
He noted that the general observation was that there were diarrhoea cases and that the majority affected were children under two years.
The PS added that the outbreak was currently being contained through rehydration.
He stated that oral therapy centres in all health care facilities had been set up.
Zwane also stated that in addition to oral rehydration salts, necessary drugs were also being administered to the infected.
