SITEKI – Police have been deployed to guard sugar cane fields belonging to Ubombo Sugar Limited.

This comes after an unconfirmed number of sugar cane fields belonging to the company were set ablaze by unknown people last week.
Striking workers at Ubombo Sugar have been blamed for this act of sabotage, but the workers’ union has vehemently denied that workers were involved.

Police Deputy Public Relations Officer (PRO) Assistant Superintendent Khulani Mamba confirmed that police have been deployed to guard sugar cane fields at Ubombo Sugar. “We have embarked on this operation since last week,” he briefly stated.

Last week, National Police Commissioner Isaac Magagula visited Ubombo Sugar Limited and was shown by management some of the burnt sugar cane fields. Minister of Agriculture Moses Vilakati and Minister of Commerce, Industry and Trade Gideon Dlamini also toured the burnt sugar cane fields.

Also present during the ministers’ tour were executive members of the Swaziland Agricultural Plantations and Allied Workers Union (SAPAWU).
SAPAWU Secretary General Archie Sayed said the union had issued a warning to its members not to engage in violent acts or sabotage. He said the union was strongly against violence and destruction of property belonging to the company.

Sayed said even though workers were on strike, they were still employed by Ubombo Sugar, hence they should respect and protect company property.
