MBABANE - A mentally challenged man set a police vehicle on fire while being transported to the Swaziland National Psychiatric Hspital. Information gathered is that the man was kept at the back of the vehicle en-route to the mental institution when he set it alight.

“The man was being transported to the psychiatric centre when he set the police van alight. I heard that they had searched his pockets before transporting him to the centre, however, they failed to note matches he had with him. He burnt the chairs at the back of the vehicle,” an impeccable source said.

Confirmed

Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Wendy Hleta confirmed the incident. Superintendent Hleta said: “Yes, We had such an incident. The police were transporting him to the psychiatric centre when this happened.”
Hleta said the police who were transporting the man noted the fire when they were around Matsapha.

Hleta further explained that an enquiry had been instituted as government’s property was destroyed.

The extent of the damages caused by the fire could not be ascertained at the time of compiling this report. The police are one of many government departments that recently benefitted from a government tender as they were allocated new vehicles. The vehicles that were distributed among the government ministries include Chevrolet Sonic, Isuzu bakkies and Isuzu buses.
However, this is not to suggest it was a new police vehicle.
