MATSAPHA – A member of His Majesty’s Correctional Services (HMCS) outclassed his former lecturer to win the Macmillan/Times of Swaziland Logo competition’s grand prize.

Bremersdorp Masuku (31) of Lobamba emerged the overall winner after his logo was voted the best. The warder went home with E10 000. Among the competitors was Masuku’s former lecturer Armstrong Mndzebele who taught him Fine Arts at the National Handicraft Training Centre (NHTC) in 2009.

Mndzebele won the consolation prize of E500 together with nine other competitors.
Masuku, who is based at Malkerns Industrial School, said he submitted 13 entries in total. He said Fine Arts had been his passion from a tender age. He thanked Mndzebele, Lucky Mlotsa and Cecil Nxumalo who inspired him. Meanwhile, a Form V pupil from Salesian High School, Sydney Langson (17), also won the consolation prize of E500. In an interview, Sydney said he liked Fine Arts and doing Design and Technology at school helped him a lot.

The competition was launched during the commemoration of the Mother Tongue Day and Macmillan Publishers put up E20 000 to be won. The artists were supposed to design a logo to be put on siSwati books.

Macmillan Publishers Managing Director (MD) Busisiwe Simelane said the aim of the competition was to encourage artists in their work. She said they received over 1 000 entries, which was a sign that there was a lot of people interested in Fine Arts.

“We would like to congratulate the winners and also thank all those who participated in the competition. We urge the participants and others to participate in such competitions in future,” she said. Simelane said the company chose the Times of Swaziland as a partner because it was a vehicle to disseminate information to the masses. She said the publication was fast and excellent with its work. She said the winning logo would be unveiled on a day yet to be announced.

Meanwhile, Times of Swaziland Managing Editor, who was represented by Swazi News Editor Phephisa Khoza, said the Times was always there to support artists by publishing their work.

“The Times is willing to help artists in the country. We have space to show their talents and they should feel free to approach the company as long as their work is properly organised,” he said.
