SITEKI – A Mhlume sugar mill worker injured his finger while carrying out his duties.

The incident reportedly occurred at around 3.45pm on Sunday.
The worker, who holds the position of front-end personnel, was reportedly trying to reposition a chain for a wetbag elevator that had jumped a link when his finger got pinched, hence the injury.

A source said the worker bled profusely and was subsequently rushed to a nearby clinic where he was treated and later discharged.
The extent of the injury was not immediately ascertained.

Sifiso Nyembe, the Public Affairs Manager at the Royal Swaziland Sugar Corporation (RSSC), disputed this in a press release, stating that the injury was minor.  “He went to the clinic where an X-ray was done. There was no fracture,” said Nyembe while also stating that the company’s safety team was currently investigating the matter.

“Our safety team is currently working on the incident investigation in order to produce a comprehensive report of what actually happened and what caused the accident so that we can be in a proper position to avoid it in the future. In the meantime, we wish he recovers well and soon,” Nyembe added.

Nyembe further stated that the company was pleased with the progress it had made in reducing disabling injury frequency rates, adding that RSSC would continue engaging its employees in working towards completely eliminating avoidable accidents.

Meanwhile, this injury follows another which occurred in February this year in which two employees at Mhlume sugar mill were injured while on duty.
The workers were admitted at different hospitals and are reportedly back at work after full recovery.
