MBABANE – A customer who walked into a supermarket run by a man who hails from India says he was told he was ugly and squirted with insect spray.
Anthony Mamba says this happened after he had complained about the service at the shop.

His main concern was the price of some of the items he wanted to buy.
He also alleges that he was called a monkey and sprayed on the face with Raid insecticide. This was on Thursday, February 20, 2014.
He has identified his attacker as Ibrahim (pictured). Ibrahim, who prefers to be called Magagula, operates a supermarket at Sidvwashini location, about three kilometres from the city centre. Mamba says the incident that happened about a week ago left with a constant pain in his chest. He sometimes coughs blood.

Mamba said he was attacked by Ibrahim while inside the latter’s shop, trading as Sidwashini Supermarket, where he had gone to buy food items. He said his sin was to enquire from Ibrahim why the cost of some items he wanted to purchase was higher than his expectation.

Mamba alleges that Ibrahim’s response was to retrieve a container, containing the insecticide and arbitrarily spraying him on his face. He said he was blinded by the fumes but managed to run for the door. “As I reached for the entrance of the shop, Ibrahim was hot on my heels, with the spray in hand. He was still pointing the spray at me,” he said.  He said Ibrahim pursued him even after he exited the shop, calling him names. “He called me a monkey and said I should never set foot in his shop,” Mamba alleged.

Mamba said at the end of the fiasco he coughed profusely and blood came out of his mouth. He said onlookers assisted him by arranging transport to the Mbabane Government Hospital.
“By the time I reached the hospital, I was short of breath.
I could not breathe properly and was feeling very weak,” he said. According to records from the hospital, Mamba was seen by a doctor on February 20, 2014. He returned on February 25, 2014 for a check-up, as directed by the doctors. The records confirm that he inhaled a chemical. “The client was sprayed on the face earlier today.

He reports to have been sprayed with doom on frequent occasions. He now complains of coughing blood,” reads the Outpatient Record/Prescription form. It was also stated that Mamba was observed to have ‘pressure of speech’ and was breathing spontaneously. The Times SUNDAY visited the premises of the shop where the incident allegedly happened.
Most of the neighbours confirmed that there was a confrontation between Mamba and the owners of Sidvwashini Supermarket.

Nobuhle Khumalo said she witnessed a near skirmish when about two Asians pursued Mamba. One of them was carrying the insecticide spray. Khumalo works in a salon business, adjacent to the supermarket.  “One of them carried an insecticide sprayer and ran after Mamba, shouting insults,” she said.
She said after outrunning the Asian man, Mamba told them that he was ill and asked for help with transport to the hospital. After the incident, Mamba reported the harassment to the police.

An officer, who asked not to be identified because there was not mandated to speak on behalf of police, said Mamba’s matter was under investigations.
“We are working on the matter and very soon we would conclude our investigations.
I cannot comment further because his file is still active and we have not concluded anything yet,” he said.

I think the customer had a right to complain about the prices and shouldn't have been insulted .
