MBABANE – The South African High Commission will host a memorial service for Nelson Mandela at the Worship Centre today.

The Commissioner, Happy Mahlangu said the memorial service was meant to honour Mandela’s legacy. Mahlangu said the Republic of South Africa and Swaziland were like an extended family.

“Swaziland is like a member of the family and to inform the family that one of their loved ones has passed on, we’ll hold a memorial service locally. Mandela was a special person to the whole world and his passing on is a loss to the world,” Mahlangu said.
The service will commence at 3pm and is expected to last until 6pm.

The South African High Commission said they were expecting representatives of different non- governmental organisations, representatives of the royal family, foreign envoys residing in Swaziland, government officials and the general public. He extended the invitation to the public to come and give the first democratic leader of South Africa a well deserved farewell.

Nelson Mandela died peacefully at his home on Thursday.
He is regarded as a martyr, a world icon, a symbol of peace and forgiveness - hence is literally worshipped, worldover.

For Swaziland, Mandela is not just a respected statesman; he is also close to the royal family by virtue of Prince Thumbumuzi marrying his daughter Zenani.
In 1993, Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work for the peaceful termination of the apartheid regime and for laying the foundation for a new South Africa.
His death has brought the whole world media to a standstill as print media, electronic media and social media focus on his mortality.

In 1990, Mandela was released from prison after spending 27 years in jail and was in 1994 democratically elected to lead the Republic of South Africa.
