KENYAN WOMAN FALLS ILL AFTER WORMS EAT HER SCALP
MBABANE – Women using human hair weaves are in danger as this product might come with a loss of life and probably lead to chronic diseases.
A Kenyan woman bought this product and started experiencing a severe headache that would not go away.
So severe was the headache that she could not sleep at night and was forced to call a private doctor.
She was given medication to relieve her pain; however, this did not solve her problem. The effect from the medicine lasted for a few hours only, and then the headache would become worse.
Specialist
Desperate, she went to see another specialist who did blood tests and even a brain scan. All the tests were negative but the headache persisted, making her unable to concentrate at work and sleeping very poorly.
Fortunately, her doctor decided to examine her scalp carefully, and, under the weave, he found worms.
The worms were burrowing into her skull and after sending the samples to the lab they found that the hairpiece had eggs from which the worms had developed. She had to shave after this ordeal and took antibiotics for two weeks. The alleged reason for the appearance of the parasites is that the hair had been taken from a dead body.
Local Traditionalist Nhlavana Maseko warned Swazi women against using such products.
He blamed it on western cultures that African people have adopted.
Maseko noted that the hairpiece were made from human hair but because this has turned into an active business, dead people’s hair was being used.
“Since this has become a massive business, the sellers seem to have no time to look into the product for its authentic nature hence they even use the hair of dead people because they are in business.
“There would have been no problems should these hairpieces been synthetic by means of using animal skins and plants, but these are human hairpieces,” he said.
Maseko blamed it on Western cultures but said there is little that can be done because Africans have already adopted such cultures.
He also noted that at this day and age, people even go to the extent of donating blood yet it was not allowed in African culture.
He said using such products was very risky, further warning women against the use of such products.
