MANZINI - A woman has been sentenced to five years after she petrol bombed a love rival’s house.

Siphiwe Mdluli (35) of Ntabamhloshana admitted to have committed arson when she appeared before Magistrate Dumisa Mazibuko yesterday.
On October 17, Mdluli is said to have set on fire and damaged a two-room flat, an immovable property in lawful possession of Zodwa Mkhatshwa.

The complainant told the court that the suspect had always provoked her. She said Mdluli started being disrespectful after having a love affair with her husband.
“This was after her husband, who was a brother to my husband died, they started having an affair and a child was born out of the relationship. She would now and then provoke me and further send her children to my home to do the same,” Mkhatshwa said.

She mentioned that on the day the incident occurred she was informed by a neighbour through a phone call that her house had been set on fire by the suspect, who was her love rival.
The complainant added that the Fire and Emergency Services personnel were called together with the police however they found all the items and the house completely burnt.

The Public Prosecutor, Charles Ndzimandze asked the complainant if the affair was official and if the husband had been officially tasked to look after the suspect.
“No one in the family officiated the affair Your Worship, it just happened and I happened to be the victim. The suspect had been provoking me in my own home and in front of my children and husband,” Mkhatshwa said.

The suspect denied that and told the court that Mkhatshwa had actually been provoking her by coming to her house to break doors and to assault her and ‘their’ husband.

Magistrate Mazibuko told the Mdluli that she had committed a serious offence as a lot of items were damaged because of her conduct.
The magistrate said Mdluli had put the complainant into a great financial loss.

“The court has noted how a lot of people have resorted to taking the law into their own hands, which is a very serious offence as they have an option of reporting such cases to the police or courts. The court has also noted that the commission of the offence was caused by a love triangle between the parties involved,” the magistrate said.
The suspect was sentenced to five years imprisonment with an option of E5 000 fine.
