NHLANGANO – Just hours after Nhlangano baked in yesterday’s hot temperatures, a mild hailstorm sent people running helter-skelter.

For about 15 minutes, the instant storm saw the small town deluged by grape-sized hailstones that sent everyone running for shelter. The storm happened at around 2pm.
Phephisa Sihlongonyane, a weather forecaster, earlier told this publication that forecasts showed that there could be more rains that would fall in different parts of the country over the next coming months.

“Around this time of the year, it is more likely that severe thunderstorms, strong winds, and hailstorms could be experienced,” he had said.
The hailstorm that was experienced yesterday afternoon caused sporadic power outages in various parts of the Shiselweni Region, particularly in Nhlangano and Hlatikhulu.
Hailstones accompanied a thunderstorm that was experienced yesterday afternoon in and around the southern towns, but no damage to property was reported in the aftermath of the natural weather phenomenon.

Motorists had a busy afternoon trying to find sheltered parking places to protect their vehicles from the hailstones.
Some motorists opted to park their cars under trees.
Driveways were covered in hail for about 15 minutes before the stones melted, adding to the streams of water running into manholes and drainages.
The stones rained for about 15 minutes before a heavy downpour, which was punctuated by thunder and lightning, was experienced.
The foul weather, lasted for about an hour and, in between, sporadic power cuts were experienced.

Weather forecasters said the weather patterns that were experienced yesterday were not something unexpected.
“We mentioned earlier on about possible isolated and scattered storms to be experienced in the country, so this came as no surprise and you should expect more of these even tomorrow,” said weather forecaster, Buhle Simelane.
