‘PROMOTED’ COP DEMANDS BADGE
MBABANE - The police officer who was mistakenly promoted was shocked as he did not receive his badge at the police stores yesterday.
Constable 3839 Busta Vilakati visited the police stores in Mbabane at around 11 am for his badge. He said he was not aware that he would not receive his badge as per the promotion.
“I was not informed of any error concerning the promotion exercise. All I know is that I have been promoted but I was shocked when the inspector at the stores told me that there was no uniform reserved for me at the stores.
“I really don’t know what to do but I think the best way is to consult my lawyer about the matter,” said Vilakati.
The Pigg’s Peak-based officer, who has served for 15 years in the police service, had his force number appearing in the list of 148 promoted police officers.
However, the police Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Wendy Hleta, stated that a typo led to the officer’s force number appearing on the list of names of the promoted officers.
Information gathered revealed that the promotion was intended for a female police officer , who is Sibongile Gweje Manyatsi, not Vilakati. According to the police service a force number is considered better than a name.
The mistaken promotion of Vilakati raised eyebrows because his case was still pending at the High Court following his suspension in the police service.
Police Deputy Public Relation Officer Inspector Khulani Mamba insisted that the promotion was not intended for Vilakati but a female officer.
He said the police service is still investigating on what led to the error after which Vilakati who is on suspension would be formally informed.
