MBABANE – Government Press Secretary Percy Simelane has said he will not address MPs-elect until they are officially sworn into office.

Simelane clarified that none of the Members of Parliament who had been recently elected into office were already MPs.

He said they were MPs-elect who currently ought to be sworn into office before they could officially be called MPs. “I am not aware of any MP as yet. MPs become legislators after being sworn in. Therefore, I will not make any comments for now until they are officially made MPs,” Simelane said.
Outgoing Prime Minister Sibusiso Barnabas Dlamini recently warned MPs-elect not to attend shady meetings. “Meetings of Members of Parliament should take place in Parliament and be thoroughly transparent,” said Dlamini.

He reminded the elected MPs that their main function was to work with the Monarchy towards the development of the country.
Dlamini said if such meetings continued to be called by unknown people it would be important to ensure that the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) was called upon to act or that the unknown people be reported to the ACC.

As per norm, around this time is when the lobbying for the position of Speaker and where candidates seek to be nominated into Senate as elected legislators according to the Constitution and Senate Elections Act of, 2010 are allowed to nominate 10 members of Senate half of which should be women.
