MBABANE – The Swaziland Competitions Commission (SCC) is happy with the different prices offered by shops for similar commodities.

Thabsile Langa, the Commissioner, said the commission was against price-setting because it was a sign of a bigger problem in the shops.
She said even though the commission does not set prices, they were against competitors who discussed prices.
Langa said there were many factors considered to determine a price.

“Some reduce prices of certain fast-moving goods as a marketing strategy to attract customers so that when they are in the shop they also buy some goods that have not been marked down,” she said.

She revealed that among the factors that retailers may consider to set their price are, the number of staff members, the amounts of salaries they need to pay, transport costs when fetching goods and mark up for profit.

Langa said that low prices may not necessarily mean poor quality products.
“It is not right for customers also to assume that products are either rejects or faulty just because their prices have been marked down,” she said.
