MBABANE – A blind woman saved her three- month-old baby boy from a fire that destroyed her house.

The fire destroyed almost everything in the only house in the homestead whose head is 55-year-old Hezekiah Dlamini.  Dlamini who doubles as a Secretary of the Nkhaba Chiefdom is a teacher by profession and works at Hawane Primary School.

In an interview, Dlamini said the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon at around 5pm.
He said his three-month-old baby was sleeping in the bedroom while the only adult available was his wife Lindiwe who was washing by that time outside the house.

Dlamini said his wife is blind and thus could not see the smoke but only smell it.  He said he was at the Royal Kraal during the incident
“When my wife wanted to get some pegs from the house she could smell the smock and felt that the house was on fire.  She managed to get inside and get hold of the baby who was sleeping by then.  From there she raised an alarm as she was alone at home and yet she is blind.

By the time neighbours arrived much damage had been done. The only things spared was some clothing especially for the children.  We lost food, clothes beds, blankets to count a few. Personally I am left with what I am wearing,” Dlamini said.
When asked about possible courses of the fire, Dlamini said he thought it was a demonic attack which was happening for the second time now.  He said the first similar fire took place in 2008 around the same period of the year.

Dispute

Given that there is a chieftaincy dispute at Nkhaba while Dlamini is a member of the inner council of the Royal Kraal under the leadership of Inkhosatana LaNcongwane, Dlamini was asked whether he suspected if the fire was related to chieftaincy feud.

In response, Dlamini could not ascertain if the fire was related to the disputes in the chiefdom and his role as a Secretary of the Royal Kraal.
He requested the public to assist them with anything including food, blankets and clothes.
The Dlamini couple has four children of which the first born is six years and the youngest is three months.
