MOTSHANE – Nkhaba Constituency gave the 2013 Parliament baton to one of its women Shainah Maseko in Saturday’s Primary Elections.

It was a first for a woman in the constituency’s history to beat males in the race for Parliament, even though this is the primary stage of the elections.

The 57-year-old amassed a total of 363 votes, followed by public transport businessman Hoppy Shiba with 294 votes and third-placed was Mandla Mdluli with 125 votes.

There were a total of 18 Member of Parliament (MP) nominees in the constituency, with some getting less than 30 votes.
“I’m very excited and humbled by the confidence the constituency has shown in me, it’s so amazing. I love to work with people and it’s something I started long ago. I think the electorate noted my contributions in taking care of the area’s orphaned children and the elderly for instance, and they want me to do greater things,” said Maseko.

With one foot in Parliament, her desire to leave a mark, not only in the constituency, but the country as a whole, intensified. Her win this time made her forget the sadness she felt after losing in the 2008 elections by a small margin. She said she was confident that this was her time to shine.

Maseko completed her schooling at Swazi National High School before enrolling for a Bookkeeping and Typing course in the 1970s.
She has spent over 25 years in the leadership of the Seventh Day Adventist Church and is responsible for setting up community kitchens for orphaned children and the elderly.
