MOTSHANE – Ex-Member of Parliament (MP) Robert Magongo’s mother, Grace, fasted and prayed for a month so that her son could win the Primary Elections.

Indeed, Magongo won with a resounding victory; his competitors could not ‘smell’ him with his 732 votes during the Primary Elelections held on Saturday. Trailing behind him was Sipho Bhembe with 114 votes, third was Swelekile Shabangu with 45 votes and lastly Zanele Vilakati with 21 votes. Magongo had earlier said the faith his constituency had in him, from the young and elderly, made him want to do some introspection and find a new and better approach in helping them.

Meanwhile, his mother in an interview yesterday, said her fasting was not in vain – winning the Primary Elections was just the beginning. She said her son was headed for another five-year term in Parliament.  Fasting and prayer was a proven formula for her as she said she did the same for 15 days awhen Magongo won the 2008 National Elections for her son to become a Motshane MP until this year.

“I only started eating on Saturday evening. All along I’ve been taking in liquids such as mahewu. I knew what I was doing and couldn’t be stopped, and God has answered my prayers,” said the 81-year- old member of Ekuphakameni Shembe Church. Grace mentioned that his son was going to go very far in his political life, even becoming a Cabinet minister at some point.  Talking about Magongo’s upbringing, she said he had a tough one because she was a very tough mother from the beginning.

“I did not hesitate to discipline him, and that’s why he is straight as an arrow. He knows me very well wherever he goes. I didn’t stand for nonsense and that has rubbed off on him too. When he came back from the cattle dip telling me that some boys beat him there, I dipping tank nurse and comfort him. Instead, I beat him too and told him to return to the dipping tank to fight and win,” explained Grace.

Robert was therefore raised under such principles of never giving up until he had won in whatever battle he was engaged in. She stated that in her younger years she would beat up boys even older than her; in fact his father and grandfather usually won fights.
Grace also said Robert’s constituency and kingdom has seen nothing yet from him because was going to do even more good, for he was a hard worker. That was how he was raised.
