MATSAPHA – In exchange for his life, a robbery suspect who was armed with a toy gun offered to reveal the identity of his partners in crime rather than being assualted.

The suspect, Menzi ‘Mathousand’ Mkhonta made the offer while being severely assaulted by customers and owners of a shop he and two friends tried to rob on Tuesday evening at Mbhuleni.
The drama unfolded at about 7:35pm when Mkhonta and his accomplices walked into the shop, Save More General Dealer situated near Eteni Bus Station.

According to an eyewitness, Jabulani Dlamini, the three posed as customers when they entered the shop.
“Upon entering the shop, two of the men went to the counter while the other stood near the entrance. The one at the entrance produced a gun and ordered everyone inside the shop to lie down. The others ordered the shopkeeper to hand over the day’s taking,” Dlamini said.

At that point, Dlamini said a member of Mbhuleni community police walked in only to find people on the floor and a man armed with a gun.
“Acting on his instincts, the community police kicked the gun out of the thug’s hand. And when the gun landed on the floor, it broke into many pieces,” Dlamini narrated.

That was when people inside, the shop realised it was a toy gun, said Dlamini.
He mentioned that his counterpart and the shop owners who are of Asian origin pounced on the disarmed suspect with the intention of apprehending him.

However, Dlamini said the suspect fought back using empty soft drinks bottles which had been placed at a corner.
Dlamini said they managed to overpower the suspect who was then severely assaulted with fists and kicks all over the body.

“He lost conscious at some point during the assault. When he regained it, he offered to reveal the identities of his friends to police. Before that, he disclosed that he was from Thunzini,” Dlamini said.
Seeing that the community members and the shop owners were concentrating on their colleague, Dlamini said the other two suspects fled the scene.
