KAMKHWELI – Renowned gospel artist Mduduzi ‘Gawuzela’ Simelane yesterday turned down his nomination for the position of Member of Parliament (MP) on the basis of his calling to serve the needy.

Simelane of Mduduzi Nezinceku Zamagawugawu gospel group declined the nomination during the process at his royal kraal, Kamkhweli, in Siphofaneni.
The gospel artist apologised to the people of Kamkhweli that he could not stand for the nomination this time around. In an interview, he said: “I belong to the people of KaMkhweli and to the Tinkhundla system of governance.

I highly appreciate the effort made by the people of Kamkhweli who want me to be their ‘servant’ in Parliament but I could not because of God’s work.” He said he might weigh his options for the Parliament race in 2018, provided the people of Kamkhweli and Siphofaneni would still be interested in using him. Simelane said he was currently focusing on his ministry, which God commissioned him to do.

“I have to see first how far I go with that ministry. If I were to do something else, it would disturb me from my calling which I have to do first,” he said. Simelane is the brains behind the famous ‘Makhelwane Simbona Ngetento’ (A good neighbour is known for his deeds) show which was aired on Swazi TV but later stopped by Cabinet under questionable circumstances.
When pressed further why he declined, Simelane said the role of being an MP was limited to helping people of that particular constituency.

Yet the role of his calling was to help all the people in the country, therefore, he said accepting the nomination now would hinder his work.
“For now I’m exhausting all my effort towards that calling which is diverse,” Simelane said.
