MAKHOLWENI - Manzini North aspiring Member of Parliament (MP) Webster Lukhele gave out oranges to about 800 aspiring soldiers and onlookers.

The incident happened during the Umbutfo Swaziland Defence Force (USDF) recruitment exercise at Manzini North Inkhundla yesterday.
Soon after the aspiring soldiers finished their 3.2km marathon, an exhausted aspiring soldier approached Lukhele and asked him to buy him an orange from a mini truck that was selling the fruit at the inkhundla.

However, Lukhele told the mini truck owners to distribute the oranges to everyone who was at the inkhundla and they responded by packing the oranges into bags and giving them to some aspiring soldiers and members of the inkhundla to distribute.
Lukhele confirmed buying oranges for aspiring soldiers and onlookers during the recruitment exercise yesterday in his constituency but denied that he did it as part of his campaign for a seat in Parliament.

“Yes I did buy something for the aspiring soldiers and onlookers during the recruitment exercise at Manzini North Inkhundla today (yesterday). However, it had nothing to do with my intentions of campaign-ing for the upcoming national elections.
“I did it because I saw how the aspiring soldiers were exhausted after the 3.2km marathon and how onlookers under the scorching temperatures needed something to quench their thirst,” Lukhele said.

However, when contacted later on the day, Lukhele refused to declare how much he spent when paying the oranges. He only said he paid for the whole truck load.
The truck owners could not be found as they left the inkhundla soon after distributing the oranges. “As you saw, I had to pay for a whole truck load because the people took everything that was in it,” he said.

Later, some people who were interviewed on different occasions regarded the aspiring MP as a life saviour.
Some said he was the kind of person they wanted in the constituency.
Lukhele will compete against reigning MP Macford Sibandze, MP Timothy Myeni’s brother Fana Myeni and Swaziland Democratic Party’s (SWADEPA’s) Jan Sithole among others.
