Former Thai PM kicked out of Dubai, not wanted in Germany
MBABANE –Days after being kicked out by the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) government, could the former Thailand prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, currently in the country, be on a visit to explore investment opportunities or to seek homage or both?
According to Thailand’s Bangkok Post newspaper, the UAE government decided to kick out Shinawatra after it was concerned that his continued presence in their country would sour relations between Thailand and the UAE.
Shinawatra is wanted in Thailand over alleged corruption and had been living in the UAE since late May. While owning Man-chester City and residing in the United Kingdom, England, Shinawatra applied for political asylum in Britain but was denied. The British government further revoked his visa last year.
In June this year, Germany announced that he was no longer welcome in that country and will be arrested if he returns. The German Embassy based in Bangkok notified the Foreign Ministry about the ban in an official letter.
According to intern-ational reports, the latest ban strikes another country off the map for Thaksin, who continues to roam the globe with a variety of passports and elude Thai authorities who say they are trying to extradite him
Thaksin was ousted by a 2006 coup after six years as Thailand’s prime minister. He was subsequently convicted of corruption and has been on the run on-and-off ever since.
Shinawatra is on a special invitation from the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Lutfo Dlamini.
Yesterday, he held a special meeting with the country’s Premier League of Swaziland (PLS) Board of Governors to share with them on how to turn their fortunes around.
When questioned by the Swazi News on Shinawatra’s stay in the country, Dlamini said; “He is leaving tomorrow (Today)”.
However, our sister paper the Times said he will also be attending the Umhlanga Reed Dance scheduled for Monday.
