Venom Hunter makes find of his career in SD
MBABANE – Host of popular wildlife show on DStv, Venom Hunter, made the find of his career when he travelled to Swaziland.
The show was aired on DStv on Sunday evening where Donald Schutz was shown handling a mamba snake, a lion and other animals.
The South African, Schultz, began the show by stating that he was on the search of a snake that had eluded him for 10 years. He said he was not prepared to fail again.
"I am in the mountains of Swaziland right now looking for the elusive berg adder. If I don’t find it now I doubt if I ever will. I have been flipping rocks for 10 years and I don’t want to fail again," he said. When Schultz found the snake under a rock he exclaimed and remarked on its size explaining that although it may not look very big it was in fact quite large for the species.
"If it hadn’t started hissing I’d have missed it. Snakes hiss when they feel vibrations because they have no external ears and can’t hear and they start hissing to chase you away," he said.
The Bitis Atropos, commonly referred to as the Berg Adder, is found in isolated mountainous regions in Southern Africa and its bite, though not deadly, does cause loss of smell, taste, vision and droopiness of the eyelids.
The herpetologist travels the world in search of biological specimens for vital research and new potential scientific discoveries.
"The Berg Adder venom will be analysed and used to treat human neurological disorders," he explained.
He elaborated that harvesting venom glands resulted in the death of that particular snake but he stated that individual sacrifice was for the greater good. "Sacrificing the animal could potentially save millions of lives and we won’t have to kill another snake of that species for many years."
He was also shown handling two deadly mamba snakes at a location that he did not mention.
The energetic Schutz mentioned that he was in the country to hunt for venom, which will be used to produce ant-venom to save people from snake bites.
