MBABANE – There was no mention of Eleanor Mbhamali at a memorial service for her husband, Petros at the Roman Catholic church yesterday.

None of the speakers uttered even a word to recall the bitterness of Mbhamali with the audience after his wife left him 15 years ago.

Petros died on April 19 at the age of 74 years.

His wife, disappeared mysteriously on September 5, 1996.

She was last seen at a hotel in Mbabane.

Petros was 59 when his wife vanished.

Reports suggested that seeing his wife behaving strangely, Petros consented to a request by Eleanor to spend a night at the hotel on September 4.

When Petros went to check on his wife on September 5 at the hotel, she was nowhere to be seen. Nobody knew when or how she left the hotel.

Nine speakers at the podium did not even hint on what Petros, the former substantive Deputy Speaker and acting Speaker for three years, used to say about his wife in numerous letters to the Editor and interviews.

He publicly declared bitterness that his wife had not been found.

Speakers concentrated on the deceased’s professional side, that is, how he served in statutory boards, his humility, bravery and passion to tell the truth all the time. They did not comfort the children who suffered a double blow when their father died last month.

He died after 15 years of waiting in vain for his wife.

The children themselves did not mention their mother when they were given a chance to say a few words about their father or how their father coped up with the situation.

It can be said that Eleanor would not have the privilege to witness the burial of her husband today.

Petros’ friends, in-laws and professional colleagues talked about his punctuality at work, well preparedness for meetings and that he was a straight talker who did not fear to tell the truth as it was.

The speakers were so brief.
