Shoprite grocery scam busted
MANZINI – A female teller at Shoprite Matsapha (Buy and Save) was arrested after she was found to have allowed her cousin exit without paying for goods worth E378.59.
If it were not for the vigilant female security guard at the exit point, Busisiwe Bongiwe Dlamini (26) of Dvokolwako would have managed to pass with the free groceries, courtesy of her cousin, Lungile Magagula (34) of Dvokolwako, who was employed as a teller.
The incident which saw the two being arrested by the Sigodvweni Police, happened last Wednesday around lunch time, when Busisiwe entered the shop like any other customer to buy.
She is said to have spent some time inside the supermarket, pushing a trolley, which she filled up before going to the counter manned by her cousin Lungile.
She is said to have joined the line and when her turn arrived, her cousin pretended as if she was recording every product on the cash register that Busisiwe had ‘bought’.
In all the groceries that she stole, Lungile only recorded one product which she later reversed its payment.
Busisiwe left a happy ‘customer’ and when she arrived at the exit, the female security guard asked for her receipt and when she produced a slip that had one item yet her trolley was full, she questioned how that happened. The security called the supermarket manager, Robert Dlamini, who investigated how she passed without paying.
Busisiwe is said to have not wasted time but pointed the teller she passed through and Lungile apologised.
She was removed from the counter and they were both kept in a storeroom, while management was waiting for the police.
The police arrived and they were both charged with theft. Yesterday they appeared at the Sigodvweni National Court before Court President Ndumiso Dlamini.
The Court President found both of them guilty of the crime and sentenced each to 10 months imprisonment, with an option of E360 fine, which they paid.
The list of the items they stole: -
*Valley farm chicken portions – E39.99
*900g Nan No2 – 95.99
* 2litre Sun cooking oil – 29.99
*Dry naps – E31.99 (were recorded but later reversed)
