DRIVER TRAPPED AFTER TRUCK CRASHES INTO CLASSROOM BLOCK
MANZINI - The driver of a horse and trailer side tipper truck, which crashed into a classroom block at Manzini Nazarene Primary School, was trapped for over three hours.
The road traffic accident occurred around 3:30am at Manzini Nazarene, along the MR3 Public Road. The truck belongs to Parsons Logistics Services.
According to a source, the truck, travelling towards Manzini, went out of control after passing the KaKhoza traffic lights.
The driver, avoiding a potentially more damaging accident due to the road’s steep left side and nearby buildings, swerved onto the opposite lane.
The truck crossed the central reservation, crashed through the school fence and crashed into a double-storey classroom block, impacting a concrete pillar at the building’s steps.
Crashed
“It was the driver’s side that crashed onto the pillar, thus it was extensively damaged and he (driver) was trapped inside,” the source said.
The source said it was still too early to speculate on the cause of the accident, and that only the driver could.
Eswatini National Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services (ENFRES) Public Relations Officer (PRO) Mandla Dlamini reported the accident occured at around 4am. Fire Services personnel found the driver trapped and spent over three hours rescuing him, despite using specialised equipment like the jaws of life. The driver, stabilised at the scene, was taken to Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital. The rescue required cutting away parts of the truck, including the steering wheel. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Senior Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the accident, stating that the driver was stable upon rescue.
Parson Logistics Services Manager Jaco Parsons stated that their investigation into the accident’s cause is ongoing. He said they will provide feedback upon completion.
