MBABANE – Prime Minister Russell Dlamini has described the level of engagement at the TUCOSWA May Day commemoration as hostile and aggressive.

He went there with the Minister of Labour and Social Security, Phila Buthelezi, and Minister of Tourism and Environmental Affairs Jane Simelane. The commemoration was organised by the Trade Union Congress of Eswatini (TUCOSWA) at the Prince of Wales Sports Ground in Mbabane. “Unfortunately, we did not get the opportunity to deliver our message to the workers as the audience began chanting political songs and the sound system was deliberately interrupted. “We did, however, arrive on time to listen to the statements delivered by the workers’ organisations, even though the level of engagement demonstrated was rather hostile and aggressive. Nonetheless, we did hear the contributions and requests from the workers, which government notes and would take forward. As we were witnessing the event, government also realised the need, going forward, to capacitate the leadership of unions,” he said.

He said government extended its hands to engage with trade unions on their important day. “However, it is apparent that union members were not ready to engage with government. Even so, government still looks forward to engaging meaningfully with labour unions, as we make Eswatini better for all,” he said. Meanwhile, over 2 000 workers converged at Goshe Szokolay Memorial Stadium yesterday, where the Labour minister was represented by the Principal Secretary (PS), Makhosini Mndawe.
