NHLANGANO – A 20-year-old woman is lucky to be alive after she was doused with petrol and set alight, allegedly by her boyfriend.

The survivor *Nandi, had to be rushed to hospital after serious burn wounds all over the body. The incident happened at Mathendele in Nhlangano. The bone of contention between the duo was that the boyfriend, Majahonkhe Nhlabatsi (23) of Hosea, allegedly wanted Nandi to quit her job as a shop assistant at a spaza. It was said that on the day of the incident, Nhlabatsi allegedly went to confront Nandi and asked her why she was still working at the spaza shop as he had told her to quit. In response, it was said that Nandi told him that she had a baby she needed to take care of, but Nhlabatsi insisted that she quit, telling her that he would give her E100 monthly to raise the baby.

Nandi refused the offer, stating that the money would not be enough to cater for any of their needs. This was when Nhlabatsi allegedly slapped her across the face. It was gathered that Nandi managed to lock herself inside a house. Nhlabatsi is alleged to have continuously knocked on the door and even went to the window, which he broke. Upon being denied entry, Nhlabatsi is believed to have left and returned when Nandi was sleeping. He gained entry through the window he had allegedly broken earlier and doused Nandi with petrol and set her alight. Nandi woke up to find herself in flames, which was when Nhlabatsi went out of the house. Nandi is said to have screamed for help and the neighbours came to her rescue. She was then taken to hospital and Nhlabatsi was arrested.  He appeared before Acting Magistrate Sindzile Mdziniso. He was remanded in custody until November 15, 2023, for trial and pending recovery of the complainant.
