MOB KILLING: THROAT SLIT, MAN BURNT WITH TYRE, PETROL

NHLANGANO – A 43-year-old man of Ngololweni was killed by a mob.

He was stabbed and burnt with a tyre on allegations that he was stealing livestock in the area. The incident happened on Sunday around 4pm. It was gathered from sources within the community that the deceased went to a Phakathi homestead, where there was a traditional ceremony and requested audience with the head of the family, Bongani Phakathi.

Imbibing

According to Phakathi (the head of the family), who narrated the events that led to the man’s death, when the man got to him, there were people of the area within the premises of his homestead who were imbibing alcohol. Phakathi stated that the now deceased man told him that he had come to buy goats, adding that he was instructed by someone to come buy them from him. Phakathi further narrated that he questioned the deceased on who the person accusing him of selling goats was, and the deceased produced a number which was dialled using the deceased’s phone. “The caller denied knowledge of the deceased and did not answer any further calls, having ended the initially call,” narrated Phakathi.

He said he then requested the man to leave his home and while at that, one of the youth members who were imbibing alcohol at his homestead came closer and recognised the deceased, whom he called by name. It was said that it was then that more of the youth members who were within the homestead joined the conversation and alleged that the deceased was a known thief and accused him of being responsible for the livestock that went missing in the area.

Dragged

It was shared by sources that the deceased, who was initially driving a car when he got to the area, was dragged out of the homestead and, thereafter, he was attacked by a mob, which consisted mostly of the youth and one of them slit his throat. “The mob further got petrol from his car which they drew into a container,” narrated the source. It was said that one of the people among the mob went to get a car tyre from a community police’s home, which they used along with the fuel to burn the man to death. It is said the deceased man was from Mshololo, on the South African side of the border.

Parked

It was gathered that the vehicle he was driving to Ngololweni was still parked there. Police reportedly arrived at the scene and found the lifeless body of the man on the ground and took it away. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the death of a 43-year-old man whose throat was slit and later burnt with a tyre. She added that investigations were ongoing.
