MANZINI - A liSwati woman, who has a child with an Asian businessman, has been reportedly ordered to vacate her three-bedroom house and stop taking rent from 33 flats which are registered under her name.

This after Thandeka Mabuza (31) separated from the father of her child, who is a businessman operating shops at Luhleko in Bhunya. Mabuza narrated that she was employed at the businessman’s shop at Luhleko in 2014. According to the woman, she was sickly such that the businessman offered to help in paying for her medical bills. She revealed that a relationship began, which resulted in her falling pregnant with the businessman’s child, who is eight years old.  Mabuza detailed that the businessman offered to stay with her and her firstborn child whom she has with another man.

Sponsored

While they were staying together, she disclosed that the businessman sponsored her to start a Mobile Money and salon businesses. “When I gave birth, I told him that since he was in and out of the country as he was not a citizen, he should secure land for me and my child to ensure that we are taken care of,” she explained. Mabuza elaborated that indeed the businessman secured land for her at Luhleko through kukhonta, which was endorsed in her name. Through kukhonta, an individual wishing to gain access to land within a specific chiefdom approaches a chief who, in conjunction with his council and the broader community, decide whether to allocate land to the individual. To be a liSwati is to have a relatively permanent homestead within a chiefdom, allowing all citizens of Eswatini to be known by their chief, the steward of their land.

Mabuza also mentioned that he (businessman) built her a three-bedroom house as well as blocks of 33 flats on the same piece of land. She said during the course of the relationship, they would have fights but would resolve their differences. During this time, she said, the businessman would travel in and out of the country as he visited his home country. She said she discovered that the businessman had impregnated another liSwati.  However, she said she maintained the relationship. Fast forward to this year, Mabuza revealed that she started getting calls from the businessman, instructing her to vacate her home. “He told me that he wanted to settle in my home with his liSwati wife, whom he had impregnated. He said I should refrain from collecting rent from the flats he built for me. I refused,” she shared. Mabuza said she got the shock of her life when the chief’s brother, who was in the company of police officers and a man they introduced as the manager of her flats, came and advised her that she was no longer permitted to collect rent for the flats. According to Mabuza, her child was also taken away from her.

Flats

According to the letter which this publication has in its possession, it indicates that the flats belonged to the Asian businessman’s two children and not their mothers. It also states that the mothers were not involved in any way and were not permitted to stay or interfere in the business, in light of the fact that there was a manager employed to look after the business. The letter highlighted that failure to abide by the instructions would lead to the law taking its course on the offenders. The letter was endorsed by the Chief of Luhleko, Zulwelihle Maseko.
Mabuza was of the view that the father of her child had allegedly corroborated with the area’s traditional leaders in taking her home and property. She said she was willing to fight for what belonged to her and her child. She claimed that the father of her child allegedly faked documents, stating that she did not own the property, when she was the rightful owner.
When drawn for comment, the businessman shared the letter directing Mabuza to refrain from operating the flats. He was asked to respond to the woman’s allegations against him. He stated that the documents were not fake because they were endorsed by the royal kraal. He also said he did not know her. When  he was later called, he did not answer his phone. Attempts to get his comment through WhatsApp proved futile as the messages were sent and received with blue ticks.
