MBABANE – Thabiso Siyaya, the Lavumisa-based police officer who was accidentally shot by his colleague after they were from arresting a suspect, has passed on.

Siyaya died on Tuesday around noon, while receiving treatment at the Mbabane Government Hospital, where he was transferred to following the incident that took place on April, 2023.
This was confirmed by the officer’s mother, Busisiwe Sikhondze, who said he would be laid to rest tomorrow. In an interview with Sikhondze, she said her son never recovered after the incident where he was shot under the armpit through his breast. Sikhondze said Siyaya’s colleague’s family had been supportive and ensured that he received quality care, including buying him medication.

Sympathy

She said they visited their homestead from the onset to offer sympathy regarding the shooting incident and that it was not deliberate. “The Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) did not even bother buying my son medication, despite that government does not have any,” she alleged. She said the police service needed to follow-up on her son but that was never done until he met his death. Sikhondze said Siyaya’s wound had been infected.

Hospital

She said following his death, some police officers came to pass their condolences and had been to the hospital to check up on him. Speaking on behalf of the Chief Police Information and Communications Officer, Inspector Mazwi Ndzimandze, said there was no official report received from the family regarding the demise of Siyaya. Ndzimandze said an enquiry file had been opened and investigations were still ongoing.
