MSUNDUZA GIRL (18) ARRESTED FOR MURDER IN SA

MBABANE – An 18-year-old liSwati female teenager has been arrested for alleged murder in Middelburg, South Africa.

The teenager, Bonisile Shongwe (18) from Msunduza in Mbabane, is a former Mater Dolorosa High School pupil, who dropped out in Form III after falling pregnant. In 2019, with no financial means to continue with her studies and supporting her child, she then sought greener pastures in neighbouring South Africa, wherein she was employed by an Asian national as a domestic worker in Carolina in the Mpumalanga Province.

Dispute

Information shared by family members was to the effect that Bonsile got into a dispute with another female where she resided. The two are said to have fought while she was accompanying her daughter to school and her opponent later returned with her 12 friends to retaliate, supposedly carrying an assortment of weapons, since she was able to win the initial fight. This is according to her older sister, Nqobile Shongwe, and these are allegations whose veracity is yet to be tested in court, as she is yet to appear on June 24, 2023. “When she saw the threat outside from her rented flat, she told me that she got  hold of a bread knife and tried  to defend herself as a fight ensued and unfortunately, she stabbed and killed one of her attackers while also injuring her hand in the process,” she claimed.Subsequent to this, the community is said to have bayed for her blood but she managed to escape and hid in one of the nearby homesteads until police were called and she was arrested and kept at the Carolina Police Station.Her sister then shared that the teenager was then transferred to the Middelburg Prison until today.“Up until today, she is being kept there as she does not have a lawyer to represent her. We have tried every other means as a family but no one has the means to afford to pay for her legal fees as our grandmother, who raised us, is old and unemployed,” said Nqobile.

Assistance

She further requested for financial assistance from members of the public to donate an amount of E8 000 to be used to hire a legal representative to handle Bonsile’s case, as she had been in custody for over three months without her case being heard. “We plead with anyone who may have the means to assist as she has a daughter to take care of, including going back to school to finish her studies as there is someone who has already offered her a scholarship,” she added.She said anyone willing to assist can contact her on 7630 3616 or  Thandi Mthembu 7611 1634 (grandmother) or the community leader, Nene Dvuba, on  7626 9859.
