MUM, SON SHOT DEAD AT LUNDZI

MANZINI – A hit man shot dead a pensioner aged 62 and her 39-year-old son on Saturday evening.

The gruesome murder occurred at Lundzi, under Mhlambanyatsi Constituency. Lundzi is a community located about 72 kilometres north-west of Manzini. According to sources, the shooter first killed the son, whom he found going about his chores within the compound. It is alleged that the killer fired a shot in the son’s chest and when he collapsed, he fired another in his head. While this happened, the deceased’s mother was closing the goats’ barn when she was approached by the killer. The sources told this publication that the gunman, who reportedly did not cover his face, fired a single fatal shot in the pensioner’s head. The sources claimed that the assassin also looked for another family member before disappearing into the thick of the night.

Sources further cast suspicions that the assassin may have skipped into South Africa after the act. Their suspicions were based on the fact that Lundzi is along the borderline separating Eswatini and South Africa. In fact, early in the month, this publication reported that the porous borderline between the two countries was a catalyst for criminal activities. Farmers from the community raised concerns that cattle rustling was rife and decried that government had done nothing to man the porous borders. They argued that they had tried several times to cross to the South African side to search for their livestock, once they discovered that it had been stolen. They said upon arrival at South African farms, they failed to locate their livestock. At times, they said, the cattle were found already rebranded.

They also revealed that thieves were now also stealing livestock from as far as Nhlangano and rustled it out of the country, via Lundzi. They said their livestock was found in places like Lothair, Mayflower and Badplass. In fact, one of the farmers engaged by this publication claimed that the main issue they faced was that anytime they reported the matters to those in authority, no immediate action was taken. He said as a result, there was conflict in the area since the residents had been accusing each other of theft. It is also worth noting that a vehicle which was reportedly used in the killing of astute businessman and football administrator, Victor Gamedze, was found dumped around Lundzi.
