INYANGA ACCUSED OF RAPING, SPRINKLING MUTI ON NIECE’S (17) PRIVATE PARTS

MANZINI- A traditional healer is accused of purportedly raping and then performing ritual acts by sprinkling muti on his 17-year-old niece’s private parts.

The incident allegedly happened at Siphofaneni on Monday. It has been gathered that the traditional healer had offered a lift to his minor niece and allegedly burnt some herbs to supposedly drug her. The names of the parties involved will not be revealed to protect the survivor from further harm and victimisation. According to Colani Nkambule, the Founder of God Knows Foundation and caretaker of the minor girl (*Nompilo), he received a call from her informing him about the ordeal. Nkambule, who assists the girl in paying school fees and providing toiletries through his foundation, revealed that the girl was on board her uncle’s car when he started burning some herbs. The founder narrated that the girl felt drowsy and the traditional healer allegedly took her to his house where he then allegedly raped and cut her with a razor underneath her breasts and private parts. He alleged that the uncle then sprinkled some muti on the girl’s private parts. “Upon receiving the information, I immediately instructed her to report the matter to the police since I was away and could not be physically there to assist her,” Nkambule said.

He further told this publication that he made calls and linked the girl to a social worker who assisted the minor in recording a statement. Nkambule said the matter was then referred to the DCS in the police department. Meanwhile, he claimed that he had started receiving death threats from the healer’s family. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed that a 17-year-old girl reported that she had been raped. Simphiwe Dlamini, a Clinical Psychologist, shared that depression, flashbacks and post-traumatic stress disorder formed part of the effects of sexual violence. “There are many emotional and psychological reactions that survivors of rape and sexual assault can experience, and one of the most common of these is depression,” Dlamini said.

The psychologist elaborated that during a flashback, memories of past traumas felt as though they were taking place in the current moment. Dlamini mentioned that after a traumatic event, it was typical to have feelings of anxiety, stress, or fear, making it difficult to adjust or cope for some time afterwards. He recommended psychological counselling to address and deal with the trauma that came from being sexually violated. Meanwhile, in September 2020, this publication reported about a traditional healer who was found guilty of raping a 15-year-old patient.
