KALUHLEKO – Human Rights Lawyer Thulani Maseko was assassinated while engaged in advanced preparations to meet the chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Troika.

This was said by Chairperson of the Institute for Democracy and Leadership (IDEAL), Barnes Dlamini. He wondered about the motive behind the killing of Maseko and said the person who initiated the assassination was short-sighted as the deceased championed a solution to the political impasse in the the kingdom that would benefit every member of the society. Dlamini, who was among the mourners and political activists found at the homestead of the deceased human rights lawyer, said the callous murder sent chills down their spines as Maseko was the glue, which held the mass democratic movement together. “We have advocated for peace and dialogue in the country and with such an incident, this fact is not holding up,” Dlamini said.

Furthermore, the IDEAL chairperson said from a week ago, they were in advanced preparations for their trip to Namibia wherein they were to meet the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation (Troika) chairperson, who is also Namibia’s president. “He was to make the follow-up this week as the meeting was scheduled to be convened with the Troika chairperson before the end of January (this month).”

Meet

Local parties are hoping to meet the chairperson of the SADC Troika in the next five weeks. The mass democratic movement (MDM) of Swaziland received an invitation from the SADC Troika chairperson when he was in the country on a work visit. President Geingob, when in the country, was quoted by Eswatini News saying that he would visit other member States and then soon the date of the Troika meeting would be set, where they would discuss all the afflictions of SADC’s member States, including Eswatini.
