MANZINI – The public transport owners want to be involved in every decision that is taken, that involves their business.

This was said by National Road Transport Council (NRTC) member Sabelo Dlamini, who spoke on behalf of the entity’s chairperson – Magesi Dlamini. Sabelo said going forward; all stakeholders should meet first before taking any decision which affected them all. He said this would help them as they were all affected when a decision was taken; more especially them, as owners of the public service vehicles. Also, he extended an apology to the affected stakeholders by the absence of public transport in the past two days, while assuring them that in a meeting they held on Tuesday with the trade unions, workers and owners, it was resolved that they would resume work today.

Contempt

Meanwhile, this publication yesterday reported that government had laid a charge of criminal contempt of court against Secretary General (SG) of Swaziland Transport Communications and Allied Workers Union (SWATCAWU) Sticks Nkambule, Eswatini Kombis and Buses Allied Workers Union (EKABAWU) and Swaziland Commercial Amadoda Road Transport Association (SCARTA). The complaint against the public transport operators and their unions was reported to the police by Acting Prime Minister (PM) Themba Nhlanganiso Masuku on Tuesday. In the statement of the criminal complaint, Masuku stated he was the Acting Prime Minister and chairperson of Cabinet. He narrated to the police that on Monday, the Industrial Court confirmed an order interdicting public transport workers from engaging in any protest, strike, encouraging others and disturbing public transport. Respondents in the matter were the SG of SWATCAWU, Nkambule, EKABAWU and SSCARTA.

Masuku said when the matter was called, all the respondents were not present in court and they were not represented. Their names were called three times but there was no response. This resulted in the court making the order final. The acting premier informed the police that in flagrant violation of the court orders, the respondents commenced their unlawful strike on December 13, 2022 by withdrawing public transport service vehicles from the roads or by deliberately not providing transport services to the public.
