MBABANE - Some Mbhuleni community members were shocked when the suspect, whom they thought was a police officer, was arrested for possession of explosives yesterday.

When this publication visited the homestead where the man was found with two explosives, 20 live bullets and an army uniform, a number of community members were found by the gate and along the fence, watching with shock as the suspect’s house was searched by the police, who later arrested him.

Assumed

Some of the community members said they used to see him either in formal wear or in smart casual clothing, thus they assumed that he was a police officer under the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) or Serious Crimes Unit (Lukhozi). They said sometimes they would see him carrying files, which made them assume that maybe he was a lawyer. One of the community members even said as a smoker, who sometimes smoked dagga, he used to hide it when he saw him coming because he feared he could be arrested for being found in possession of the drug without a licence.

Businessman

Others said people who claimed to be close to him alleged that he was a businessman who operated a security company. Meanwhile, some community members came to the scene where the police were effecting the unrest with their children. The community members were leaning on walls and fences as they wanted to witness the arrest of the suspect. They were ignorant of the fact that the police were carrying assault rifles and also wearing bulletproof vests. As this was happening, the minors were seen running up and down the street while some of them were already playing different games on the bordering the yard where the suspect was.
