CONDUCTOR CRASHES QUANTUM, 2 DIE

BUHLENI – They were rushing for work, hoping to get there on time but did not make it.

This was the sad ordeal yesterday along the Buhleni-Msahweni Road where two people died when a Toyota Quantum they were passengers of veered off the road and crashed. The vehicle is said to have been driven by a conductor (umholeli) while the usual driver took up the  position of conductor during that trip. It is alleged that the designated driver of the vehicle had handed over the driving to the conductor when they joined a gravel road leading to an area known as Mavula.

It is alleged that they headed to Mavula, an area near Buhleni to fetch employees of a textile company. When they were returning from Mavula, it is alleged that the designated driver was supposed to take over and drive but instead, the conductor continued while on the tarred road. As the vehicle continued towards Buhleni area, it is alleged that the conductor lost control of it. It is then that the vehicle was flung over a steep edge of the road and crashed, as narrated by eyewitnesses. As it crashed, it is said to have rolled several times before hitting a pole where it eventually stopped. Some of the passengers narrated that had it not hit the pole, it would have continued rolling and that more people would have possibly died.The vehicle is said to have been carrying 18 people who sustained serious injuries. They were rushed to the Mkhuzweni Health Centre for treatment.

As soon as the accident happened, news spread to their colleagues at the textile companies situated in Buhleni. Some of the employees from the companies rushed to the hospital where they found several of their colleagues waiting to be attended to. One of the passengers is said to have died instantly during the accident while the second person died while being attended to at the hospital. The Chief Police Information and Communications Officer, Superintendent Phindile Vilakati, confirmed the accident and the death of the two people.  
She said the cause of the accident was still being investigated.
