SOLDIER SHOT DEAD IN FRONT OF CHILDREN

MATSAMO – Two children aged four and six witnessed an incident they may never forget – their father being shot dead.

This was the situation when William Shongwe, who was a soldier based at Nkoyoyo was allegedly gunned down on Wednesday evening while relaxing at his home near Matsamo at a place known as Madelezini under Timphisini Inkhundla in northern Hhohho. According to a relative, Shongwe was off duty on the day he was allegedly killed. He alleged that the attacker appeared to have been a young person who fled after the shooting.

It is alleged that on the day of the shooting, William was sitted outside his house with two of his younger children and his wife. However, his wife is said to have gone into the house to prepare some water for him to bath. While she was preparing the water, a youthful man is said to have entered the homestead and allegedly headed straight for Shongwe. It is alleged that the shooter fired three shots, two of which are said to have hit the deceased in the head.

Upon hearing the sounds, his wife is said to have gone out of the house, only to find her husband lying dead on the ground. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed that a 48-year-old man was shot dead. This publication also gathered that Shongwe was also recently attacked by a group of people and the incident was reported to the Ludzibini umphakatsi. The matter is said to have been pending at the umphakatsi.

Noteworthy, William was also the son of a former Indvuna of the King’s regiments, Mbutfo Uyandzindza Shongwe. Mbutfo Uyandzindza was dismissed in 2016 over a song. This was confirmed by then Governor the late Timothy Mtetwa.
