MANZINI – Two fathers killed their babies by forcing them to ingest pesticides following misunderstandings with the mothers of the children.

On Friday, at Buhlebuyeza under Madlangampisi Constituency, Musa Mathole Nxumalo (40), killed his son aged two, by forcing him to ingest a pesticide. Nxumalo then committed suicide by ingesting the same poisonous substance. This incident has left his family devastated. Celani Nxumalo, who is a brother to the deceased, in an interview with Eswatini Television, said his brother (Musa), before killing his son, called a relative of his live-in-lover and informed her that he was about to force his son to ingest the pesticide. Celani said the relative had informed them that she heard the whole ordeal as the deceased was playing with the child and telling him to drink. This, he said, happened also in front of two teenagers. Celani said the teenagers intervened and ordered their father to stop forcing the minor to ingest the pesticide; but failed to do so as he threatened to force them to also consume it.

He said the teenagers watched helplessly as their father forced their two-year-old brother to drink the pesticide. He said days leading to the gruesome act, he had heavily assaulted the mother (*Futhi) of his son. Celani explained that he engaged the deceased about the assault after being informed by a relative. He said what he gathered was that the mother of the minor had been heavily assaulted and as such lost a lot of blood. Celani said on Friday, was called by a family member, informing him that Musa had ingested a pesticide. He said leading to Musa ingesting the pesticide, a month ago, he had tried to hang himself. Celani said the deceased and Futhi were live-in-lovers for a lengthy period; but had misunderstandings after the latter informed his brother that she was now in a relationship with another person. He said following this, the pair visited him at Mhlume seeking his mediation. However, upon their return to Buhlebuyeza, Futhi left with the baby and said she was visiting her parental home.

During the said visit, Celani said the deceased would contact Futhi’s homestead and be informed that she was not there. This, he said, resulted in Musa fetching his son. On the other hand, a four-year-old baby boy of Nsingweni died after being forced to ingest a poisonous substance by his biological father while at Nsingweni. After allegedly killing the child, the father also tried to commit suicide but failed and was admitted to the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital, in a critical condition. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the two incidents. Vilakati said on Friday at about 4pm, a two-year-old baby boy of Buhlebuyeza died after being forced to ingest a poisonous substance by his biological father. She said the father, aged 40, collapsed and died after ingesting a poisonous substance as well. Also, she said on Friday morning, at about 8:30am, a boy aged four of Nsingweni died after being forced to ingest a poisonous substance by his biological father.
