NHLANGANO – Since Thursday, the country has suffered six arson attacks, the latest being at Zombodze Emuva Constituency Centre, which was torched yesterday by unknown arsonists.

Zombodze Emuva is close to the southern boundaries of the country, in the Shiselweni Region. It was established from security personnel that the incident happened around 4am. According to security guard, Vincent Shabangu, two men came to the constituency centre and he was of the view that they wanted water. He thought the duo was from a drinking spree.
In fact, he said he saw them walking towards the tap, which had been locked, and he concluded that they would turn back after noticing it could not be used. “I suddenly heard a banging noise and in a split second, there was fire inside the building,” narrated Shabangu. He said when he approached, the two men who had covered themselves with hoodies ran away.

According to Shabangu, it was then that he raised the alarm and called the police. During a visit to the inkhundla, it was noted that it was partly burnt, mainly the constituency secretary’s office. It would seem documents were targeted by the arsonists. Personnel from the Eswatini National Fire and Emergency Services, were also called to put out the flames. They had to cut the burglar bars to gain entry. Some of the burning papers had to be thrown out through a window and the fire was put out. Shiselweni Regional Secretary Mzwandile Mthethwa, along with Zombodze Emuva Member of Parliament Muzi Kunene and other leaders, were found at the scene to assess the extent of the damage. The police and forensic team were also found at the scene yesterday.

Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the matter. She said police were still investigating the arson incident. This arson attack follows four others that happened recently, where it was reported that there was an arson attack that saw Pigg’s Peak Town Council suffering E3.6 million worth of losses. On Saturday, Eswatini News reported two arson incidents wherein a soldier and warder’s houses were torched in two different incidents. Yesterday, the Times of Eswatini SUNDAY reported that LaMgabhi Constituency Centre building was torched by unknown people and it suffered a loss of about E2.6 million.
