BUHLENI – After spending nearly E1 million on building his house and buying furniture, it was a big loss for a warder as all this went up in smoke.

This was the reality yesterday for Assistant Superintendent Sabelo Tfumbatsa, who is a senior warder based at a Big Bend Correctional Facility. His house situated around Mpofu was petrol- bombed resulting in four rooms being damaged and also the furniture in the house. Tfumbatsa’s home was targeted on the same night as that of senior military personnel Polycarp Maseko. It is alleged that the house was petrol-bombed during the early hours of yesterday. No one was at Tfumbatsa’s homestead during the arson attack. Though someone normally lives at the house, on the night, it was gathered that there was no one at the home. He stated that it appeared the men threw the petrol bombs in each of the rooms of the house. He said they destroyed all the furniture which he estimated to be over E200 000.

Damage

He stated that the total damage to the house as well as items that were in the house could be estimated at nearly E1 million. Tfumbatsa was also asked if he thought that he was targeted for political reasons or if it were personal. He said he had no idea why his homestead was targeted. He said he did not remember having any disagreement with any person. Further, he also said, if it was personal, he wondered why a soldier’s home was also targeted. He confirmed that police officers also arrived at the homestead to record statements. The Chief Police Information and Communications Officer, Superintendent Phindile Vilakati, confirmed the two arson attacks.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, residents of Pigg’s Peak woke up to a shock after discovering that three heavy-duty vehicles had been set alight by unknown people. It is alleged five people entered the premises where the vehicles were parked, assaulted a security guard and set the vehicles alight. No one has been arrested yet in all these incidents.
