MBABANE – For now, emaswati can breathe a sigh of relief following that the 12 suspected cases of monkeypox disease came back negative.

As such, the country still has not recorded positive cases of monkeypox, despite the increasing number of suspected cases. This is according to the Minister of Health’s statement which was shared by Minister Lizzie Nkosi on national radio yesterday morning. She said recently, 12 suspected cases were reported, resulting in some samples being taken to South Africa for analysis. She said none of the results came back positive.Worth noting is that monkeypox disease has been declared a global emergency after it was detected in many countries, with the Central and West Africa leading. Nkosi shared that in as much as there were increasing numbers of suspected monkeypox cases reported to health facilities, there was no positive case detected in Eswatini so far.

Preparedness

When asked about the country’s preparedness in case there was a monkeypox outbreak; Nkosi said Eswatini had learnt a lot from COVID-19 in terms of preparedness. As a result, she said everything was in place to fight the disease. She said there were currently many centres which were as a result of COVID-19. On another note, Nkosi warned the nation to exercise extra caution in preventing the disease, which was spread from one person to another by direct skin-to-skin contact. The disease may also spread through close contact or contact with infected bodily fluids or contaminated object such as bleeding or clothes. The minister advised the nation to always wash their hands as one of the prevention measures. She also warmed that people should be isolated or isolate as soon as they suspected symptoms.
