NGWENYA – About 78 people were nabbed by security agents over the weekend for gaining entry into the country through an informal crossing point at Ngwenya.

This was during a special operation by soldiers manning the Oshoek borderline at Ngwenya on Saturday. The operation came in the wake of circulating reports that there were some foreign elements who were smuggling firearms and dangerous weapons into the country from foreign countries. This was evident in recent times when unknown people committed murders in different parts of the country. The unknown people mainly targeted members of the country’s security forces.

Furthermore, a person was recently murdered at Ngwenya in a dagga deal gone wrong. It is for that reason that the security forces, comprising of the army and police, reportedly intensified their operations. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer, Superintendent Phindile Vilakati, confirmed the arrests in an interview with the Times yesterday.

Appearances

The arrested individuals are expected to have already made their appearances in court. This reporter’s effort to reach Army Public Relations Officer Lieutenant Tengetile Khumalo were futile yesterday. A questionnaire was sent to the army spokesperson through WhatsApp and her mobile phone rang unanswered on several occasions.
