MBABANE – Mystery surrounds the death of a teenage couple at KaBhudla area.

The duo is believed to have committed suicide following the male partner’s alleged failure to raise bus fare for his girlfriend to return home, after spending a couple of days at his place of abode. Sources close to the matter disclosed that the teenage girl from Ngomane area, left home to visit her boyfriend who resided at KaBhudla, without having gotten  permission from her mother.

The names of the boy and the girl are known to this publication but cannot be revealed for now, as investigations into the circumstances that led to their death are ongoing. The source related, albeit on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter, that the couple is believed to have committed suicide inside the boy’s room.

“The two lovebirds decided to end their lives after the girl partner raised a concern to her boyfriend that her mother, who is a police officer, would ‘deal with her’ (sic) for having absconded home,” the source disclosed. “What made matters worse was a situation whereby the boy expressed to the girl that he had no money to give to her for transport back home. They then jointly decided to ingest a poisonous substance.”

Discovered

The two deceased lovers were discovered by a relative, in an unconscious state, after having ingested the unidentified poisonous substance. The relative had reportedly noticed that the two were taking a long time to come outside. It was then that the alarm was raised, after which the duo was rushed to the Raleigh Fitkin Memorial (RFM) Hospital where they were later certified dead. Chief Police Information and Communications Officer Superintendent Phindile Vilakati confirmed the incident, when this newspaper interviewed her yesterday.

The Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) spokesperson said: “Yes, I confirm that a double suicide happened at KaBhudla area.” However, she could neither confirm nor deny the circumstances that led to the double suicide incident. She said she was not in a position to confirm the allegations that the couple committed suicide because the boy did not have bus fare to give to the girl to return home. “We don’t know who killed who because we are talking of people who are dead now,” Superintendent Vilakati said.
