LOBAMBA – The Attorney General (AG) Sifiso Mashampu Khumalo had a real busy day yesterday as he conducted the swearing-in ceremony of the three recently appointed Senators.

Present during the ceremony held in Senate was the Deputy Prime Minister (DPM), Themba Masuku, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Pholile Shakantu and the Minister of Labour and Social Security Phila Buthelezi. The newly-sworn-in senators are Princess Gcebile, Chief Zabeni Shiba and Sigombeni Dlamini. They were recently appointed into these crucial positions by His Majesty King Mswati III.

Before administering  the ceremony, the AG, who doubles as the governor of Ezulwini, said the legal gazette formalising the appointments, came out on June 10, 2022, before His Majesty the King appended His signature on the 14th of the same month. He explained that before a member of the House takes a seat, they were expected to take an oath of allegiance. The first to take the oath was Princess Gcebile.

Worth noting was that the princess had to be called twice because in the first instance, she had not raised her right hand, as per the norm. Speaking after the swearing-in of the new senators, Senate President Pastor Lindiwe Dlamini said: “Senators are senior citizens. They strive for peace and welfare of the Eswatini  nation.” She told the new senators that: “We hope you shall add value to the good work that we have all along been doing for the country. Don’t be misdirected by people who have their ulterior motives.”

Congratulated

Meanwhile, the Deputy Senate President Ndumiso Mdluli  congratulated the new senators on their appointment to serve in the upper House of Parliament. “The senators you are joining today have worked with honesty and determination for all their time,” he said. “Here, we work in close cooperation with each other. No one is better than the other.”
